Whitby turns steampunk as hundreds descend for weekend spectacle
Whitby Steampunk Weekend XIX draws to a close as fans fill the town with Victorian-inspired fashion, live music and events, set against the North Yorkshire coast.
A North Yorkshire seaside town has once again been transformed as steampunk fans arrived in force for one of the UK’s best-known celebrations of the genre.
Whitby Steampunk Weekend XIX comes to an end today, Sunday, February 8, after a packed programme of events spread across the town. While the main hub is Whitby Pavilion on the West Cliff, the distinctive costumes and creations could be seen throughout the weekend in locations far beyond the venue itself.
The town’s setting played a starring role, with steampunk fans posing for photographs along the promenades overlooking the North Sea, as well as inside the bustling trading hall where stalls showcased fashion, accessories and handmade curiosities.

Photographer Garry Hornby, a member of The Press Camera Club, documented this year’s gathering, capturing images that reflect both the creativity of attendees and the atmosphere created by Whitby’s dramatic landscape.
Live music formed a key part of the weekend, alongside special guest appearances from figures from television and other invited speakers. Fashion shows also took place, helping to raise funds for Whitby and Scarborough Dog Rescue.

Steampunk first appeared in the 1980s as a tongue-in-cheek science-fiction label, built around the idea of Victorian-era steam power driving futuristic technology. Drawing inspiration from writers such as Jules Verne and HG Wells, it has since developed into a worldwide subculture encompassing literature, fashion, festivals and DIY “retro-futurist” engineering.
The Whitby gathering is widely regarded as one of the largest steampunk events in the UK, and once again proved a major draw for visitors to the town.
